The word tinnitus describes a condition whereby noises are heard from inside your body as opposed to from an outside source. The symptoms are a continuous ringing or buzzing sound which can be very distressing. Other sounds that may be heard are humming, grinding, hissing or whistling. Pulsatile tinnitus is a noise that beats in time with your pulse.
Around one in every three people suffering with tinnitus don’t have any hearing problems and it isn’t apparent what causes the condition although experts believe it’s to do with how the brain interprets the way the ear hears sound. In fact if you were to go into a totally sound proofed environment most of us would experience tinnitus but our attention is drawn away from this internal noise because our lives are surrounded by external noise.
Stress and anxiety play a significant role in tinnitus. Anxiety, depression and stress can be present before the onset of tinnitus. It is widely thought that tinnitus can be made worse by stress.
Hypnotherapy is an excellent therapy for both stress and tinnitus. Hypnotherapy accesses the subconscious mind allowing you to tune out from the sound. The deep relaxation achieved serves to quieten the internal noise until you fail to notice it. Once learned, the technique can be used whenever needed.
